Biographische Angaben

Hella Anna Maria Scholz was born in Berlin on 29 December 1928 as the younger of the two daughters of Bruno Scholz, a merchant in building materials, and Klara née Kaiser. She was educated in Berlin. In 1942, she met Günther Junge, a pilot with the German Luftwaffe. They remained a couple until Günther’s death in an air battle on 27 January 1944.

After the war, Hella worked as a laboratory assistant for a British military medical unit in Hannover. Here, she met her future husband, an Englishman named William Fuller. They married on 1 January 1951 at the Ploughley & Bullingdon Register Office in Oxford, and in February of that year Hella became a British citizen. She and her husband lived in Oxfordshire and had no children. Hella later moved to Penarth in Glamorgan, Wales, where she died on 31 January 2003.

Eingrenzung und Inhalt

From Hella in Charlottenburg, Berlin. She complains that her praise for his frequent letters was given too early. She has lots of essays to write on things such as Kant, Lessing and an English task on Julius Caesar. She has also signed up for a course on the Renaissance. But it is high time she set herself to work as she has recently spent a lot of time swimming. Girls have started to have to do guard duty at the school. Previously the boys did this but they are now needed elsewhere. She wishes him success and stamina in sport. He is working on his ‘silver’ while she is just starting on her ‘bronze’. The letter is continued on 7 February 1943. She had to stop writing yesterday as her mother wanted to take her shopping to buy some nice summer material for Hella. They were unsuccessful. In the evening she read the novel Heinrich von Plauen which she finds strays a bit from the historical truth. She was on duty today at 7 am on a Saturday. In spite of lovely weather she is going to spend the day studying. She signs off asking for a letter from him. With envelope.
