Typed letter from Darina Laracy, Schmelzbergstrasse 22, Zurich, Switzerland to ‘Darlings, Mamma, Papa, sisters and rest of family’, providing a lengthy and detailed account of her movements on the Continent, including her work in Rome alongside the American anti-fascist journalists John Whitaker and Raymond Allen; her expulsion from Italy by the Gestapo; her journey to Berne, Switzerland on the day that Hitler invaded Russia (22 June 1941); her arrest and interrogation in Berne on grounds of suspected espionage; and her blossoming friendship with Ignazio Silone. In a handwritten note in the margin dated 19 September 1942, Darina complains that the letter has just been handed back to her by the post office.
