Mary [O’Neill] is enjoying her time in Roundstone and has become great friends with Gerard Dillon. There has been a lot of social interaction, but the undercurrent of Kate’s mind is one of fear and panic. Her overdraft remains an enormous stumbling block. There is some talk of a film deal, but she cannot really see it happening. She has to cut the letter short because she is feeling sick and shaking so violently she cannot write. With envelope.

Letter from Kate O’Brien, The Fort, Roundstone, county Galway to Lorna Reynolds, 21 Herbert Avenue, Merrion, Dublin. Kate asks for news of Lorna’s family and gives an account of the antics of her two kittens. She is progressing with Teresa [of Avila], but has lost all impetus. She discusses her financial situation, made worse by a bankers’ strike. Lorna’s family’s offer of collateral and that of [Petronella] O’Flanagan would make it possible for her to secure a loan from the National Bank, but she has been advised to put The Fort up for sale as soon as possible, which has really upset her. With envelope.

Letter from Kate O’Brien, The Fort, Roundstone, county Galway to Lorna Reynolds, 21 Herbert Avenue, Merrion, Dublin. Kate thanks Lorna for her long letter. She has felt so estranged from her that when she finished Teresa [of Avila] and took it to the typist she couldn’t wire her the good news as she felt Lorna wouldn’t care. She thinks she finished the book well. She discusses the sudden death of her cousin Bill McCarthy at the age of 41 from intestinal complications. Mary [O’Neill]’s aunt has also died, having suffered a stroke on being told about the death of Mary’s mother. Kate is concerned for Mary, and unsure what to do for the best. She makes arrangements to meet Lorna in Dublin on her return from Dublin. Attached to the letter are four Irish Hospitals Sweepstake tickets. With envelope.

Letter from Kate O’Brien, The Fort, Roundstone, county Galway to Lorna Reynolds, 21 Herbert Avenue, Merrion, Dublin. She discusses at length the welcome she received from her cats on her return. She outlines her planting plans for the garden and wishes Lorna were there to discuss them with her. She describes the death of the local butcher, John de Courcey, who was something of a character in the village and whose funeral was enormous. She was trying to persuade her maid Ellie to move to Dublin, where she could work for Lorna and others, but she has her mind set for England. She is anxious to hear Dr Nixon’s report on Lorna’s health. She thanks Lorna for her pleasure with and interest in Kate’s novel [The Flower of May], which has encouraged her to continue writing it with renewed energy. She has had a rude letter from her agent about the prospects of securing film rights for Mary Lavelle. She has also had a letter from her publisher Max Parrish about offers for language rights in Teresa of Avila from Germany, France and Spain. She continues anxious for news on Dr Nixon’s assessment of Lorna’s state of health. With envelope.
