Teil von The Lorna Reynolds Papers

Letter from Kate O’Brien, Letterdyfe, Roundstone, [county Galway] to Lorna Reynolds, 21 Herbert Avenue, Merrion, Dublin. Kate arrived at Letterdyfe from Galway without a hitch, but finds it grotesque to be there without Lorna. She is expecting Harry early next week, and her sister Anne for a long weekend sometime soon. She is suffering from rheumatic pain in her shoulder and has been too tired to write anything, least of all Teresa of Avila. She asks for news of Lorna and her family and expresses her longing for her. Attached to the letter is a dried flower. With envelope.

Kate has gone over The Fort with a decorator from Cork and if Harry approves of his price will start work early next week. She has asked for ten days’ grace and asks Lorna to postpone her planned visit by a couple of days. She is unhappy about Lorna’s lecture on 13 July, but she might go up with her for it and bring her back at once. Her sister Anne is with her and is immensely impressed with The Fort. With envelope.

Stephen O’Mara’s cousin Jim Ray has died and Anne has to cut short her visit and to miss Lorna, unless Lorna arrives on Sunday. Kate is delighted with her two domestic helps, Nora and Joe. She is amazed how natural it feels already to be living at The Fort. She encloses £5 for Lorna’s train ticket and emphasises the traffic chaos that Galway Races will cause. With envelope.

Letter from Kate O’Brien, The Fort, Roundstone, county Galway to Lorna Reynolds, 21 Herbert Avenue, Merrion, Dublin. Kate has had a rude letter from the building contractor Frank Hegarty demanding payment. While his claim was legitimate, Kate found the tone of his letter disturbing. To get over the shock caused by it, she spent the day rearranging the furniture in her bedroom and study. She encloses a sketch of the new arrangement of the latter. Having settled her nerves, she sent the letter to her agent [?], who has been lethargic of late about Kate’s affairs, and asked her to take it to Fay Blacket Gill and get her to answer it. She also wrote to Harry to explain the situation. She considers at some length the nature of human love. She asks for news of Lorna and her family and gives a brief sketch of the activities of her new kitten. With envelope.

Letter from Kate O’Brien, The Fort, Roundstone, county Galway to Lorna Reynolds, 21 Herbert Avenue, Merrion, Dublin. Kate has no news, and the post only brings bills and threats. She gives an amusing account of a visit by Gerard Dillon and [George and Margaret] Campbell, who had spent the day cycling and, being drenched from the rain, ended up sitting around the fire in their underwear. Kate has had thank you-letters from Darina [Silone] and her Indian paramour Keshev. Her kitten has been identified as male and she is thinking of calling him Tom Kelly, or Kelly for short. Her sister Clare is coming to stay for a week. With envelope.

Kate wishes Darina [Silone] and Keshev would leave Ireland and stop creating a dangerous scandal in Dublin. Kate’s sister Clare is staying with her. Her domestic help, Ellie, is not a tidy worker, but Kate likes her. She continues to ponder the ongoing debate with Lorna on whether to live alone or not. She is concerned about the stress and strain under which Lorna lives and urges her to take care of herself. With envelope.
