The market for old writers is terrible, unless one is prepared to write pornography or science fiction, neither of which she can manage. She is hoping to secure a fortnightly reviewing job with the Yorkshire Post, and one of the Oxford Women’s Colleges has suggested that Kate might give extra-mural lectures to their students. Heinemann wants her to return to Russia in the spring to write a light and friendly book, which would be serialised before publication, for example in the US and in the Sunday Times.
