Letter from Kate O'Brien to Lorna Reynolds

Teil von The Lorna Reynolds Papers

Letter from Kate O’Brien, 23 Beekman Place, New York 22, [USA] to Lorna Reynolds, 21 Herbert Avenue, Merrion, Dublin. It is now twenty-eight days since Kate last saw Lorna and the distance between them seems incalculably stretched. Katharine Cornell has been released from hospital and has gone to a quiet mountain village in South Carolina to recuperate. Kate is mad for the rehearsals to start as she has no chance of returning to Ireland until she has seen the play open, which will be at least five weeks from the start of the rehearsals. She apologises for her dull letters, but she feels perpetually tired and hot. With envelope.

Letter from Kate O’Brien, 23 Beekman Place, New York 22, [USA] to Lorna Reynolds, 21 Herbert Avenue, Merrion, Dublin. Kate accepts Lorna and Eleanor’s decision to wait until the winter before going to Davos and urges Lorna instead to spend the money Kate has sent her to clear her income tax bill. Kate thanks Lorna for her short story ‘Black Stockings’ and critiques it. She asks her to send her a copy of the Dublin Magazine. Kate has had a break from her play [That Lady] as Guthrie McClintic was out all day and she has had a chance to write letters. She describes in some detail a dinner she has had with Ruth O’Neill [of Columbia Artists Management, Inc.] and a concert to which Kate accompanied her. She talks at some length about her brother Michael O’Brien, whom she regards as a clever and successful banker, a kind and helpful person, but completely hollow. She is getting ready to have her photograph taken by a representative of the Pan-American Photographic Corporation. With envelope.

Letter from Lorna Reynolds, 21 Herbert Avenue, Merrion, Dublin to Kate O’Brien c/o Katharine Cornell, 23 Beekman Place, New York 22, USA. She is annoyed at herself for what she wrote to Kate about Mabel’s condition, all of which turns out to have been based on misunderstanding and exaggeration. Eleanor’s condition, however, continues to worry her. She thanks Kate for the book on Shelley by Norman White, which has just arrived. She is disappointed to relate that Seumas O’Sullivan did not include her short story ‘My Grandmother’s Habit’ (for which see P74/3/1/3/19) in the latest issue of the Dublin Magazine and that it will not be published until July. She has translated Ada Negri’s poem ‘Reflection in April’ from Italian. She has sent it to the Irish Times and encloses a copy of the poem for Kate. She asks if she should send poems to The Spectator. She is sorry that Kate’s activities in America have been ground to a halt by Katharine Cornell’s illness and recouperation. She thanks Kate for her offer to use the open cheque to clear her income tax bill, but will do nothing of the kind. With envelope.

Letter from Kate O’Brien, 23 Beekman Place, New York 22, [USA] to Lorna Reynolds, 21 Herbert Avenue, Merrion, Dublin. She is sorry for all the domestic difficulties Lorna is experiences and wishes she was there to support her. She admires Lorna’s translation of the poem from the Italian (for which see P74/3/1/2/23/7) and gives her advice on who to contact in The Spectator. She describes her visit to Boston and Harvard and her meeting with cousin Jenny in the convent, which turned out to be delicious fun. She has had lunch with Helen Keller, an experience she describes as interesting but imaginatively exhausting. With envelope.

Letter from Kate O’Brien, 23 Beekman Place, New York 22, [USA] to Lorna Reynolds, 21 Herbert Avenue, Merrion, Dublin. She finds it hard to take in that she will be returning to Ireland so soon. She has had no luck in finding John Callery. She has phoned all five Callerys in the Manhattan telephone book and drawn a blank everywhere. She is meeting Vivian Mercier in the evening and will dine with him later in the week. With envelope.

Letter from Lorna Reynolds, 21 Herbert Avenue, Merrion, Dublin to Kate O’Brien c/o Katharine Cornell, 23 Beekman Place, New York 22, USA. She is overjoyed to hear that Kate is returning sooner than expected. She agrees with her that Kate should travel to Southampton and not get off at Cobh. She is delighted with the excited reception Kate’s play [That Lady] has received and hopes that it will be done in England first. She is grateful to Kate for having remembered her small request regarding John Callery. Lorna has been ill with liver trouble and her aunt Nell is in hospital. She has only just received a copy of Hughes’ The Nascent Mind of Shelley which she ordered from Hodges Figgis two years ago.
