Part of The Hella Scholz Papers

From Hella in Charlottenburg, Berlin. Hella has deliberately not written in a while so that he can experience how unpleasant it is to have to wait for post. Her time looking after children has now finished. It is unknown where her school will go. Although they do not have lessons, they still have to attend a roll call. Her things are ready for leaving. They even have to take a feather bed with them. They won’t be separated out into civilian quarters but will stay all together in a camp, just like in the KLV. Hella is supposed to be a KLV leader herself, but argues that this is not possible as she wants to sit her leaving certificate and stay together with her school. She went and got her picture taken for Günther. She hopes to be able to stay in Berlin to the end of the month as there is a film coming out that she would like to see. She went to Günther’s house to return a book. The house is looking good again. Only his father was there, but she received a letter from Günther’s mother. With envelope.

Part of The Hella Scholz Papers

From Hella in Charlottenburg, Berlin. She starts by saying that a letter she had sent to Günther on the 7th has been returned as the address was unknown. She admits that whilst she sometimes deliberately makes him wait for news from her, this time she was innocent. It is difficult to obtain paper to write letters on. The weather is extremely warm, but she is able to buy ice cream from the money earned whilst working. The school still does not know where it will be sent. She is enjoying frequent trips to the cinema. She suggests recording letters on tape instead of writing them, but thinks that she would soon run out of things to say. With envelope.

From Hella in Crimmitschau. She has been put on ‘washing duty’ for the week. She does not have much to do apart from school work so she thinks about Günther. Part of The Hella Scholz Papers

From Hella in Crimmitschau. She encloses a travel book for Günther so that he will have something to read. She has never read it herself. She asks if Günther was involved in last night’s air attack on Berlin. Hella and all in the camp had to spend the night in the air raid shelters. She hopes Hans was not hurt by the attack. She does not know how her parents are as she cannot reach Berlin by phone. She thinks that it won’t help to panic and get upset. Hella asks Günther to write to his mother. This is in response to a letter Hella received from Mrs Junge. The camp is expecting a visit from the District Leader from Dresden. Her parents are asking after Günther.

Part of The Hella Scholz Papers

From Hella in Crimmitschau. Hella thinks that the post cannot be working as she has not heard from him. Everyone is wrapping parcels as last post for Christmas is that day. The director of the commercial college has presented the camp with pictures of holders of the oak medal [associated with the Iron Cross]. Hella wonders why the camp should be decorated with pictures of men. The camp leader has returned. She asks if Günther will be able to visit over the holidays. With envelope.

Part of The Hella Scholz Papers

From Hella in Crimmitschau. Hella had hoped to have had a letter from Günther. She really enjoyed the biscuits he sent. After eating one she went to bed and had a lovely dream about him. She stops writing to go for lunch and comes back disappointed. There was swede for lunch. The final exams are fast approaching, though she doesn’t think that they will have to do the whole diet, but can choose which subjects to be examined in. She suspects this is so that the teaching staff can leave early to be trained as helpers for the Luftwaffe. She gives her weight and asks if he is now happy that she is not wasting away. She closes by saying she is off to sleep as they are all supposed to take an afternoon nap. With envelope.

Part of The Hella Scholz Papers

From Hella in Charlottenburg, Berlin. She complains that her praise for his frequent letters was given too early. She has lots of essays to write on things such as Kant, Lessing and an English task on Julius Caesar. She has also signed up for a course on the Renaissance. But it is high time she set herself to work as she has recently spent a lot of time swimming. Girls have started to have to do guard duty at the school. Previously the boys did this but they are now needed elsewhere. She wishes him success and stamina in sport. He is working on his ‘silver’ while she is just starting on her ‘bronze’. The letter is continued on 7 February 1943. She had to stop writing yesterday as her mother wanted to take her shopping to buy some nice summer material for Hella. They were unsuccessful. In the evening she read the novel Heinrich von Plauen which she finds strays a bit from the historical truth. She was on duty today at 7 am on a Saturday. In spite of lovely weather she is going to spend the day studying. She signs off asking for a letter from him. With envelope.

Part of The Hella Scholz Papers

From Hella in Berlin, Neuwestend. She is going to continue to be good and reply to his letter immediately. However school is about to start and then Günther may have to wait for letters as she will have to do her school work. She makes a comment about the Luftwaffe bombing in Belgrade at Easter. She spent Easter at home. They had relatives over to visit. She went to see the film Die verkaufte Braut. She liked this film, but was disappointed with the film Maria Stuart which she saw a few days earlier. Recently she has found quite a few films disappointing. She bemoans her laziness when it comes to school work and is already looking forward to the Whitsun holidays. Recently Hella’s class went on a rainy walk from Wannsee to Potsdam and enjoyed making fun of their ‘class daddy’. Hella asks why Günther’s letters only refer to the pleasant side of his posting, and never to his duties which she is sure he must have. She asks if he knows how long he will stay there. Her family thank him for his greetings and her father accepts Günther’s news about stamps and tobacco. It is late and Hella is cold and so is going to bed. With envelope.

Part of The Hella Scholz Papers

From Hella in Charlottenburg, Berlin, addressed to Munich. Hella is enjoying her free time though her mother is sick. Günther does not like it in Ingoldstadt and Hella hopes that in a few days his duty there will be over and he will get something better. She asks if he knows where he will be stationed next but guesses it will be somewhere far from Berlin. Hella asks if his stomach is better. She is sorry that he is not getting good food and hopes he will soon get used to not having roast pork. Hella will be eating duck and red cabbage for her dinner today. Hella plans to darn tights in the afternoon. She has as yet been unable to fulfil his wish that she think about him at night time as she came home late last night, but she now has plenty of time to daydream. With envelope.
