From Bill at CML, Nicosia. Bill writes that there is nothing new to report except a few more bombs thrown and a few more people shot. He asks Hella to thank her mother for a New Year card she sent him. He asks her to write. He does not know if she is getting any money. He has started a savings book. He does not like the Mess or the men there. His room is dirty and very small and he is sitting in bed to write the letter. Colonel Bowmer has left the CML and the army. He is going to Canada and indicated that there would be a job there for Bill. He finishes by saying he loves her.

From Bill at CML, Nicosia. Bill has heard from his mother that Hella is to take the IMLT [Institute of Medical Laboratory Technology?] exam and is sure she will pass it. He asks if she found her testimonial folder. He has just sewn on a button thanks to a needle and thread Hella put in his ‘housewife’. It remains dangerous in Cyprus, ‘People are still getting blown up and shot’. He misses her, loves her and wants her back.

From Bill at 29 Hannover to Hella at British Military Hospital (BMH) to Bristol Hill Hospital, Berlin. Bill writes that he is missing Hella a great deal. On Monday his supervisor is going to the Labour Office to ensure the correct papers are sent to Berlin. He thanks Hella for her last letter and asks her to write again and finishes by saying that he loves her. With envelope.

From Bill in Stockwell. Bill has been corresponding with his lawyer [about his divorce] and hopes all problems will be solved by the end of the year and he will be free. His father has been diagnosed with carcinoma of the rectum and so Bill may have to apply for an extension of his leave. He has written to Captain Davies to explain the situation. If he does not need or get an extension he should be back with Hella on 3 June, the evening of the day she has invited her mother. He asks if Hella’s mother’s visit can be changed. His mother sends her best regards to Hella, and Bill sends his to Hella’s mother. With envelope.

From Bill in Stockwell. Bill starts by referring to unspecified bad news relayed by Hella and states that this does not affect their marriage plans, as he can still sort things out before he goes. He has written to Captain Anderson to explain the situation. With regards to his [divorce] business, he has sent the money he has had to pay and is waiting for a copy of the decree to prove he is unmarried. He is still waiting to hear from her about the forms and suggests it would be better to send them to her before she goes to Berlin so that this will not further delay her coming to England. Work in the lab is quiet but he is busy as he is now also working as Mess caterer. He writes that if they are both working they will be able to afford all the things Hella has indicated she wanted on a list.
