Part of The Hella Scholz Papers

From Hella in Charlottenburg, Berlin. She is attaching a pictorial joke which she saw in a newspaper yesterday and wanted to share it with Günther. Hella is now having to get used to the idea of going back to school. They are given a lot of lectures about redeployment but as yet no firm plans have been revealed. If the weather stays nice Hella does not plan to be in school often. Hella’s mother has just given her a large portion of ice cream. On 1 May she went for a walk with her parents and some friends in the Grunewald. On Sunday morning she went to a special exhibition on Michelangelo in the Mamorhaus. In the evening she went to the cinema with her parents to see Münchausen which she really liked and recommends that Günther should go and see it if he gets the chance. School started on Monday so there is not much news and Hella finishes her letter. With envelope.

Part of The Hella Scholz Papers

From Hella to Karl Gessner [‘Onkel Karl’, her mother’s life companion]. It is three days since her return from Berlin. Bill and Hella speak about Onkel Karl a lot as he must be finding it hard to get used to being alone. In the meantime they hope he has heard from Hanni. Bill and Hella love him, both for his sakes and for her mother’s, and hope that he gets better soon. She talks about her mother’s death and is glad that Bill not only understands her love for her mother, but shares it too.

Part of The Hella Scholz Papers

From Hella to Karl Gessner. She describes a house she has newly moved into and all the hard work it will take to make it comfortable. Bill is finding his new job as quartermaster very boring. They would both prefer to return to Germany but must make the best out of their situation. She sends greetings to Walkers and Frau Masuck and signs off with love.

Part of The Edward P. McGrath Papers

Letter from Hugh Kenner, writer, critic and author of inter alia 'Dublin’s Joyce', 512 Hunter Street West, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. In reply to a question posed by McGrath, Kenner suggest that Joyce’s talent was to some extent recognised or Dubliners would not have been accepted by the publishers in the first instance. States that he suspects that Joyce had ‘powerful ecclesiastical enemies in Dublin’ and that this may have had some bearing on why the there was a delay in the publication of Dubliners.
