Typed letter from Kate O’Brien, 34 Beaufort Gardens, Brompton Road, [London] SW3 to Anne O’Mara. Kate has been receiving massage and exercise treatment and is feeling better. She has managed to find a flat through a friend in Mecklenburgh Square, in the location she wants, the size she wants and at rent she can afford, but she won’t be able to move in until July as it has to be repaired from war damage. She hopes to have begun another book before returning to Ireland. She relates that the American publishers have rejected the title That Lady and will publish the book under the title For One Sweet Grape instead. The end of the letter has been cut out.

Letter from Kate O’Brien, 116 Clifford’s Inn, [London] EC4 to Anne O’Mara. Kate is writing the letter in a café trying to revive after an early morning recording session for the Overseas Programme at the BBC. She thanks Anne and Stephen for their hospitality and adaptability during her lengthy stay. Kate is hoping to be back in Ireland shortly. She and Guthrie McClintic will almost certainly be in Ireland for the second half of December.

Her novel [The Flower of May] crawls forward at her usual slow opening pace. She is amused at an offer of one of her novels being turned into an opera.

Kate thanks her and Stephen for their invitation to stay with them at the Hibernian for Mary’s first night, which she was unable to accept, being too tired and in arrears with work. She enjoyed her recent jaunt into the Alpes Maritimes, where life is cheap and attractive. She mentions Mary O’Neill, who has had a marvellous escape from a misadventure, which has left her with facial injuries. She finishes off by hoping that she may have another first night for Anne and Stephen during the winter.

She is expecting Guthrie McClintic’s arrival in London in December. She is delighted with her expedition to Connemara and the prospect of buying property there, and gives an amusing account of her house-hunting activities.

The letter is mainly concerned with Kate’s state of health and the approaching Christmas holidays, which she intends to spend with the O’Neills. She is frustrated that Guthrie McClintic didn’t turn up, sending a total stranger to work with her instead. She finds working on the play again after the long interval quite interesting.

Lorna Reynolds is staying at Achill with her. She has no news yet of when she may have to travel to America. She asks if Anne might be able to join her in Achill for a few days.
