Notice biographique

Simon Dalby was educated at Trinity College, Dublin (BA) and the University of Victoria, Canada (MA) and holds a PhD from Simon Fraser University of British Columbia, Canada. He was Professor of Geography, Environmental Studies and Political Economy at Carleton University in Ottawa until 2012, when he joined Wilfrid Laurier University’s Balsillie School of International Affairs as professor of Geography and Environmental Studies. His research interests include climate change, environmental security and geopolitics, on which topics he has published extensively.

This collection consists of published and unpublished material assembled by Simon Dalby for the preparation of his MA Geography thesis, ‘Political Ecology: A Study of the Irish Anti-Nuclear Movement’ (University of Victoria, Canada, 1982). Published material includes articles; books, booklets and pamphlets; conference proceedings, speeches and public lectures; EEC communiqués; newsletters; periodicals; press cuttings; reports; and treaties and acts. Unpublished material comprises correspondence, minutes, reports, fact sheets, posters and other items created by Irish anti-nuclear groups including Alliance for Safety and Health (ASH), An Taisce, Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, CONSERVE, Donegal Uranium Committee, The Ecology Party, Friends of the Earth, Noxious Industry Action Group, Nuclear Opposition Wexford, Nuclear Safety Association, Socialist Labour Party, Trade Union Anti-Nuclear Campaign and UCC Nuclear Opposition Group. There are also notes made by Simon Dalby during the preparation of his thesis, including extracts from published material; notes taken during interviews, conferences and seminars; and notes on minutes and correspondence.

Appraisal, destruction and scheduling

All records have been retained except for some duplicates, which have been destroyed.

Accruals

No accruals are expected.

System of arrangement

The material has been arranged into three series. Series 1 contains published material, arranged into nine sub-series by form. Series 2 contains unpublished material and posters, advertisements and photographs. It has been arranged into eighteen sub-series by creator or type. Series 3 consists of notes made by Simon Dalby and contains four sub-series according to research source. Within each sub-series, items have been arranged chronologically by date.

Unrestricted access to most items. Some files contain personal information relating to people living or presumed living and are closed for 50 years to protect individual privacy. These files have been identified in the descriptive catalogue.

    A set of maps and holiday brochures found among the papers were transferred to the Ciaran McAnally Travel Collection and are available for consultation in the Special Collections and Archives Department.
