The material in this collection was sourced by Professor Robert A. Stradling for his book *The Irish and the Spanish Civil War 1936-1939*, published in 1999. An intimate view of life in Spain for the Irish Brigadiers can be gleaned from some of the written material, which includes photocopies of diaries, memoirs, correspondence and routine orders. An entry in the diary of Tralee-man Tom Hayes, Legionnaire in ‘D’ Company, dated 15 December 1936, provides an account of the journey to Lisbon on board the German ship, the S.S. Urundi, noting ‘In bed all day very sick… Weather is bad… A lot sick one man broke leg other scalded when ship swayed…’ (P13/1/1/3/1). Photocopies of routine orders, many of which were originally typed out by Matthew Beckett of Westport, county Mayo, offer an insight into the daily life of volunteers after they reached Spain, addressing areas such as divine service, casualties, decease in strength, transfers, promotions, inspection of equipment, cleanliness and parades (P13/1/1/5/3).
The memoirs of Matthew Beckett, who served as Legionnaire in ‘C’ Company, offers a harrowing account of his company’s first night in Badajoz, stating ‘In Badajoz we had the first glimpse of the kind of war we were going into… It bore the marks of war on many buildings – blood-stained walls, scribbled mottoes on buildings… The Church had been used a stable for the mules during the Red occupation and it was badly marked & statutes burnt and defaced. A number of nuns from the adjoining convent had been tortured and shot’ (P13/1/1/5/10). One of a series of letters home from a young Brigadier with ‘C’ Company, Patrick Hickey, reassures his mother about his drinking habits in Spain, ‘…we get paid every week and we spend on grub and cigs, I never touch the drink now it is only a cod getting drunk out here you need your head where I am…’ (P13/1/1/2/3). Possibly one of the most poignant documents in the collection is a copy of the autograph book of Lieutenant Tom Hyde of ‘A’ Company, the first casualty on the side of the Irish Brigade. The document is a testament to the popularity of this man from Midleton, county Cork. Amongst the many warm messages from his comrades is one from General Eoin O’Duffy himself, recorded after Hyde’s death in February 1937, which reads ‘To Tom in Heaven. You were the first to join the Brigade, you were the first to give your life for this cause which the Irish Brigade is fighting for’ (P13/1/1/6/1).
The photographic component of the material includes a collection of original prints from James Roche, a photocopy of the collection of Joseph Cunningham and mostly photocopies of images of other Irish Brigadiers including Matthew Beckett, Leo McCloskey, Diarmuid O’Sullivan, James Finnerty, Patrick Hickey and Padraig Quinn. The James Roche collection contains views of life at the garrison at Cáceres, the trenches in Ciempozuelos and La Marañosa. One of the most moving images in this group is that of the body of Lieutenant Tom Hyde after an attack at Ciempozuelos (P13/1/2/1/3). The oral material consists of a series of sound recordings of interviews conducted mainly by Professor Stradling between 1994 and 1996 with Irish Brigadiers, their families and friends and addresses issues such as what prompted them to join the Irish Brigade, their experiences in Spain and their views on the recognition received by the Brigade on their return from Spain from the church and the state. William Geraghty, from Dublin, attempts to explain his reasons for travelling to Spain by stating the following: ‘…in my limited learnings of the history of the friendship that existed between Spain and Ireland and all that Spain tried to do in the sad times my forefathers experienced, the Spanish Armada, giving sanctuary to the O’Donnells and all the rest…I felt indebted to Spain for their kindness to… our ancestors’ (P13/1/3/3).
Administrative documentation includes military dispatches, telegrams, correspondence and memoranda in English, Spanish, French and Italian, addressing a range of issues such as the arrival of the Irish Brigade, Irish casualties, the hospitalisation of Irish Brigadiers, disciplinary problems, the behaviour of General Eoin O’Duffy, the dissolution of the Irish Brigade and arrangements for repatriation, the issue of minors serving in the brigade and the activities of *Irish Independent* journalist Gertrude Gaffney. A photocopy of a telegram from Mussolini in March 1937 contains a message of support for the Irish Brigade, which translates as follows: 'Let the Legionnaires know that I am following hour after hour their action and it will be crowned by victory’ (P13/2/1/2/5).
Media coverage consists of newspaper articles printed before, during and after the war. Of particular interest is a series of articles produced by Special Correspondent for the Irish Independent, Gertrude Gaffney, giving an account of the day-to-day experiences of the Irish Brigadiers (P13/3/1/1/1-2). Post-war coverage includes articles in numerous Irish newspapers, with some items on the International Brigade (P13/3/1/2/1). It also addresses other published material including books, periodicals and other sources (P13/3/2/1).
The major strength of the Robert Stradling Collection is the fact that it successfully assembles documentation relating to the role of the Irish Brigade in the Spanish Civil War from a range of different sources, in Ireland and Spain. This body of material provides a number of different perspectives on the war, including the personal accounts of the Brigadiers, the official documents of the administration of General Franco and the Irish Brigade, and the views of the media at home and abroad. In addition, it provides access to copies of material that in many cases remain in private ownership today. The emotional impact of this collection cannot be underestimated. The official documents of the Irish and Spanish administrations provide an insight into the mechanics of war, whilst the diaries, memoirs, photographs and sound recordings provide a rare glimpse into the thoughts, feelings and actions of those men that followed General O’Duffy to Spain. This is a rich body of material that will provide a valuable source of information to researchers in Ireland and abroad.
The material is divided into four main series. Series 1 contains documentation sourced from Irish Brigadiers, their families and friends and includes written, photographic and oral material. Series 2 focuses on administrative documentation, mainly between Franco’s administration and that of the Irish Brigade. Series 3 focuses on media coverage of the Spanish Civil War in Ireland, with some examples from foreign sources. It consists primarily of newspaper articles printed before, during and after the war. Series 4 contains letters from donors and related material. Each section is broken down further by document type, names of Brigadiers and thematic headings. These are listed in chronological order.

This collection comprises primarily photocopies of material sourced from surviving Irish veterans of the Spanish Civil War, their friends and families. In addition, copies of documents were assembled from numerous library and archive services, including the Archivo General Militar at Ávila, Archivo del Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores (Madrid), Archivo General de la Guerra Civil Española (Salamanca), National Library of Ireland, and National Archives, Dublin. The oral accounts were recorded during visits to Ireland in 1994 and 1996, with the exception of the recording of Jimmy Kavanagh by his son, James, in 1992, and the Radio Éireann interview with Phil McBride in 1986. A large quantity of published sources was also assembled and reproduced, including newspapers, books, periodicals and magazines.

Also contains copy of a letter from Padraig Quinn, Gowran House, to Joe Doyle, which reassures him that they should not be upset by men withdrawing their names from membership of Brigade (23 October 1936). In addition, a copy of a letter to Doyle from John C. Dunphy, 52 Tullow Street, Carlow, who states ‘I am instructed by Capt. Quinn, who was himself instructed by General O’Duffy, to request that you… procure a passport immediately, for all European countries. Do not mention Spain. If you choose, say you are going to a job somewhere’ (18 November 1936). Also contains list of articles necessary for each volunteer which includes one small valise, one heavy overcoat, one pair of breeches, one pair of heavy nailed boots (or shoes), three pairs of heavy socks (hand knit if possible), one spare set of heavy underwear, one leather strap strong (over 42” long), one pouch (for ammunition) and one shaving outfit.

Diary of every happening from day to day from above date from Tralee to Spain to join Irish Brigade of General Franco’s Army.’ Records daily entries on experiences including leaving Tralee on Saturday 12 December 1936 for Spain, life on board the German ship, S.S. Urundi, noting on Tuesday 15 December, ‘In bed all day very sick… Weather is bad… A lot sick one man broke leg other scalded when ship swayed’, also noting land sighted, trip to Salamanca and the ensuing reception on Saturday 19 December 1936, stating ‘Thousands to meet us here. Eat grand dinner & after had a party. Were made drunk on wine’, followed by arrival at Cáceres and meeting with General Eoin O’Duffy, noting on Monday 21 December, ‘Addressed by General O’Duffy. Told us we were going up the line to Madrid shortly after xmas’. Also records receipt of uniform and rifle, writing first letter home on 3 February 1937, and inspection visit by General Franco, stating ‘Sat Feb. 6th 1937 at Cáceres Barracks inspection of Irish Brigades & marched past General Franco making the salute. He said he was very pleased with The Irish Brigade’. A lso records the capture of Malaga by Franco, receipt of payment, noting on Sunday 14 February 1937, ‘Monday received new pair of boots & got 15 pesetas’, moving towards front lines in Madrid and casualties in cross-fire with friendly troops, noting on Thursday 18 February, ‘Upon sight the Spaniards opened fire on the leading company led by Capt O’Sullivan & Lieut. T. Hyde, resulting in the loss of the latter & Daniel Tuiete, Tralee, R.I.P. & some Spanish officers & men amounting… to about 5 dead & about 4 wounded’. In addition, records battle in Ciempozuelos and lives lost, and reaching Madrid, visit from General O’Duffy noting on Saturday 17 April 1937, ‘He gave a great speech & he told us we were going home to Ireland forthwith & we were disbanded’, return to headquarters in Cáceres to get cleaned up, and the final journey home noting ‘June 21st 2 P.M. set feet on Irish soil. Left Dublin at 9 P.M. Landed in Tralee 3.15 A.M. Tuesday. Big reception in Dublin – Split with O’Duffy’.

Photocopy of handwritten memoirs of Matthew Beckett, former Legionnaire in ‘C’ Company of Irish Brigade, entitled *The Irish Brigade* and beginning with the line ‘Since the upheaval in Eastern Europe and the friendship that has arisen between the two Germanies and between the U.S. and Russia’. Records his view on fascism, noting ‘there has been a new thinking about Communism and Socialism and in time this may also show that Fascism (as it was conceived, but perhaps not practiced) may not have been such an evil thing at all, while Communism has been revealed in all its brutalities in Romania, East Germany, Hungary etc’, adding ‘Perhaps also it will show that the Irish Brigade with O’Duffy in Spain was fighting for an ideal far nobler and more important to mankind than the International Brigade’. Refers to recent deaths of other volunteers of Irish Brigade, namely Joe Cunningham, former Lieutenant Quartermaster in ‘D’ Company and Dan Walsh, former Legionnaire in ‘C’ Company. Also notes some of the names of other volunteers and their political persuasions, stating ‘contrary to the usual opinion that all who followed O’Duffy to Spain were Blueshirts, there were many who were identified with other parties like Capt Quinn ‘C’ Cy who was a Fine Gael man, Ward & Meaney, who were Northern Nationalists, Eamon Horan (Kerry), Dermot O’Sullivan (Dublin), [Mich] O’Brien (Dublin) were all prominent in Fianna Fail’. Also records memories of the journey to Spain via Portugal, on board the Ardeola, first night in Spain in place called Badajoz, stating ‘In Badajoz we had the first glimpse of the kind of war we were going into. The town had been captured by the Nationalists and recaptured by the Reds and had again been recaptured by the Nationalists a short time before we arrived. It bore the marks of war on many buildings – blood-stained walls, scribbled mottoes on buildings… The Church had been used a stable for the mules during the Red occupation and it was badly marked & statues burnt and defaced. A number of nuns from the adjoining convent had been tortured and shot’. Also refers to journey to training headquarters in Cáceres, arrival of new volunteers, members of the ‘C’ Company, and an incident involving one of the volunteers and a live grenade. Notes also order to go to the Front, and train journey there, stating ‘The train started off at a break-neck speed… the train was signalled to stop… As it came to a halt the driver & his mate jumped off and ran, but were quickly captured and we were informed that they were Red Army members’, followed by an account of journey to Ciempozuelos and attack by friendly troops from Canary Islands who mistook them for ‘Reds’, casualties, and some of Beckett’s responsibilities stating ‘I was in charge of supplies (as Headquarters Cpl.) and this meant supervision of stores and food preparation when we were in reserve. In the lines, it meant that we brought the food by mule cart & distributed it’, also notes move to [La Marañosa], and his role as Company Clerk which involved drafting routine orders, noting ‘It meant that I drafted coy. Orders, named the orderly officer in charge each day, orderly segt. And the men to go on “Police Duties”. The Routine Orders were then signed by the o/c and posted up.’ Also refers to end of six-month period and talk of going home, ‘At home, though we were not aware of this, the Government (urged on by the League of Nations) demanded the return of the Brigade, under the threat of taking away our right of citizenship’, and also notes the Irishmen that stayed behind to fight with a Spanish Bandera and concludes ‘The end of a dream perhaps, but we saw it as a gesture of Ireland’s gratitude to Spain for what Spain had done for Ireland in past. The cynic might well say – “Both efforts were failures”. We did not feel that way’. Paginated and recorded on loose sheets of a diary.

Photocopy of memoirs in typescript of Joseph Ó Cuinneagáin [Cunningham] entitled *The War in Spain*, printed by *The Echo*, Enniscorthy, county Wexford, with pages missing up to page eighteen, and begins ‘…to concede that Franco’s fine melange of forces, each with its own peculiar idea’, recording his views on Franco and his influence, an attack on the ‘Reds’ in the second week of March, stating ‘With more than 50,000 rounds of rifle and 12,000 of M.G. ammunition, ‘C’ Company had enough materials if judiciously employed, to last them one day’s hard fighting… our only doubts centred on the worthiness of our guns. Rifles, bearing dates ranging from 1890 to 1934 (and there were few as recent as this), are no great boon to modern infantry. None were automatic, and in practice, had carefully to be nursed, for ten rounds in quick succession so heated the breach as to compel a cessation of fire’. In addition, notes the arrival of a company of mixed Moorish and Spanish cavalry, meals, changes in command due to illness, and an attack seven miles from Valdemoro claiming some fifteen casualties stating ‘Even had the aircraft assisted the advance – and the weather forbade that essential aid – it would have been impossible to dislodge the posts in the caves, which held them as in a vice. An assault by night promised some success, by day it was a suicidal sacrifice, however noble its inherent inspiration’, cancellation of movement into village of Titulcia, and arrival of harps from Ireland, ‘It was a few days before the advance that harps arrived from Ireland to be a distinctive feature of our attire. One was worn on each lapel of our tunics, our attached Spanish officers taking particular pride in this emblem’. Also records the attack of a sniper and enhancing security through use of passwords stating ‘To combat this prevalence of sniping an order was issued authorising all sergeants to arrest those who, after 9.30p.m., could not give the night’s password. This had its comic side too as it led to the excruciating torture of Spanish place names.’ Also records celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, with wine, cigarettes and even a football match between young Spaniards and a section of the ‘D’ Company, noting ‘Play conformed to no fixed rules, but the association code was more in evidence than that of any other appellation. No quarter was given or asked but the thurstful Irish attack could not compare with the fine constructive craft of the Spanish combination’, manning the front, and the journey to La Marañosa. Handwritten letter from historian Des Ryan, Moyross, county Limerick to Robert Stradling, enclosing a photocopy of the handwritten memoirs of Maurice Fennell of Rathkeale county Limerick, former Legionnaire of ‘C’ Company of Irish Brigade. The memoirs, entitled *SPAIN 1936-1937* begin with the line ‘The Monarchy in Spain came to an end in 1931’ and record Fennell's view of the history of the Spanish Republic, noting ‘The new Government brought neither peace, or stability to Spain. Revolutionary strikes, and anti-clerical outrages, were common everyday occurances, churches were desecrated, and burned to the ground. Bodies of Priests, and Nuns, were exhumed, and inhumanly degraded’. The years leading to the civil war were marked by ‘twenty-six changes of Government… several local Revolutions, and almost daily civil disturbances’, the formation of The Popular Front, outbreak of Spanish Civil War in 1936, and the Irish response stating ‘Due to our historic ties with Spain, and a strong Anti-Communist emotion, which was now engulfing the entire nation, North and South, General O’Duffy had little difficulty in recruiting an Irish Brigade, to fight for Christianity, and Spain, and in an indirect way, for Ireland’. Also notes the passing of the Non-intervention Bill, members of Irish Brigade including many old Irish Republican Army and ex-army officers, setting off for Spain on board the *Dun Aengus* during stormy weather, stating ‘The storm was still blowing, and the rain pouring down, no food, no sleep, no water, and very little hope. Despair was clearly visible on every face’, and rescue by a German grain boat, stating ‘They then left down a number of wooden ladders tied together, and eventually they were made fast to the rail of the *Dun Aengus*. However it was like climbing on to a “bucking bronco”. The difference was, that if you lost your grip, or made one slip, you were catapulted into eternity, via the freezing, turbulent, awesome, waves of the Atlantic Ocean’. Also records experiences of Salamanca, stating ‘The huge square was bedecked with beautiful flowers, buntings, and Irish and Spanish flags. The hundred or so tables were attended by charming Signorettes in Native Costume and the food was sumptuous, or so it seemed… after almost seven days of starvation’, and training at Cáceres where he notes ‘Our individual training was carried out in the big Military Barracks… Just outside the back wall, there was a sand-bag embankment… We later learned that it was a shooting range of a different kind. It was here that Red Troops, who were tried, and found guilty, of certain crimes, were executed. It was not a nice sight, I went to see it once, and that was enough’, the daily routine, mass at Church of San Domingo, journey to the Madrid Front and attack by ‘friendly troops’, stating ‘It is amazing how quickly one adjusts to the circumstances, in a situation such as this, one’s fears, and forebodings, seem to vanish and instead there is a feeling of elation, having beaten the defending backs, and sees the line at his mercy, in the dying moments of a Rugby Match’, the atrocities, attacks by ‘the Reds’, mining a railway used by ‘the Reds’, and the final journey home, stating, ‘Our Crusade was ended. We may not have had any great effect on the outcome of the War, but we played our part, to the Best of our ability… it is no small consideration to know that we were on the winning side, and that in so doing we repaid, in a small way at least, part of our long-standing debt to Spain.’ Paginated.

Fennell, Church Street, Rathkeale, county Limerick, regarding his article in the *Irish Independent* on 2 March 1976 and Cunningham’s own published memoirs, and notes ‘I am wondering is Sergeant Sheehy (Garryowen?) alive or Tom Neaney. Tom saved my life once (I have always felt) when he stopped a runaway mule in Ciempozeulos one afternoon with Paddy Casey (Donegal) and myself helpless in the dray. I can still see it careering furiously for the narrow archway leading from the town to the lines.’ In addition, notes holding an interview with General Franco in 1973. Also gives an update on the whereabouts of some of his former colleagues from the Irish Brigade. Concludes by stating ‘For me the fight in Spain was Christ – v – Anti-Christ and everything really Irish must be radically Christian. A Republic that would not be Christian would not be Irish’.

Fitzgerald, Jersey, to Denis O’Shaughnassy, Corbally, county Limerick, complimenting his article in the *Limerick Leader* and outlining his life after returning from Spain, which included joining the R.A.F. In relation to Spain, notes the first casualty of the Irish Brigade, ‘It was Tom Hyde from Middletown Co Cork one of the flour milling family’, and also describes an attack on the railway line from Madrid noting ‘We blew the train off the track and all the train crew were killed’. In addition, mentions losses to the company and outlines a rescue operation of one of his men, stating ‘I raced up the left bank hoping I might save him. I grabbed his arm while I held on to a small bush on the bank three of my men pulled me and the man out. We wouldn’t have lasted another 30 secs.’ Also records training in base at Cáceres. Photocopy of a letter from Welsh landowner, Evan Morgan, Lord Tredegar, to Louis [La Fleur], as he made his way to the Canary Islands referring to his travelling companions on board the SS Alondra as ‘the vanguard of Genl. O’Duffy’s Greenshirts’, and stating ‘some of these gentlemen were by no means easy in their minds respecting the adventure into Spain. They had just received orders to go, so they went. Some had thrown up good job. One of the youngest, a certain Connolly, had had to leave a £12 a week job at the Ford car place at Dagenham… Connolly was endeavouring to work himself up to a bloodthirsty mood by studying the poems of Thomas Davis… This was a fine young fellow, far too good to be wasted on that affair’. Notes also reception at Las Palmas and Santa Cruz, military precautions, popularity of General Franco in the area, troops training in the Canaries and his interest in folklore. Sound recording of interview conducted by Robert Stradling with Bernie Boles, Cahir, county Tipperary, who recalls knowing William F. McGrath, Cork, who served as Sergeant in ‘B’ Company of Irish Brigade in Spain. Notes how McGrath had been working in Fords, county Cork, and attended meeting in Imperial Hotel in approximately August 1936, before being persuaded to go to Spain as an interpreter. Outlines journey to Spain via Lisbon, on board a German vessel, with group consisting of mainly cashiered army officers and policemen. Notes the red light district in Lisbon, stating ‘There was some... time in Lisbon to organise buses to Spain… he [McGrath] told me… it was almost time for the buses to go and several of the Irish fellas were missing… Willie had an idea where they were going because he had heard them talking on the boat about women… so he went towards what he understood to be the red light district… he went down to this house… and here were my brave Irishmen with madam’s ladies… and they were all in this sort of a saloon, and they were all drinking tea or coffee… a few of them [the ladies] had rosaries around their necks and Willie saw the rosaries and he said to the lads… “What are they doing with your rosaries, “Well”, they said, “we hadn’t any money… and that’s all we could give them, and they were quite happy to take them”’. Also notes the horrendous condition of the barracks at Badajoz, upon the arrival of the Irish Brigadiers, due to a massacre that had previously occurred there. Also refers to drinking habits of the Irishmen and the lack of uniforms, stating ‘they were given from Germany… these uniforms… and they were beautiful material, but they were completely wrong in size for the lads because they were all small fellas… so Willie had to go around the town… it could have been Badajoz, to get the seamstresses to make up the uniforms’. In addition, notes that the men never got into battle although two got shot, and meeting ‘Franco’s Moors’. Also makes reference to letter from Welsh landowner, Evan Morgan, Lord Tredegar, to Louis [La Fleur], as he made his way to the Canary Islands (see P13/1/1/12/1).

Sound recording of an interview conducted by Robert Stradling with the younger brother of Major Patrick Dalton, Officer Commanding of Irish Brigade in Spain, noting that Patrick would not have gone to Spain had his mother been alive. Also states that his brother had been an officer in the Irish Free State Army, and then worked in Dublin with Bookmaker, Joe Cunningham. States that Dalton was a personal friend of O’Duffy and was in charge of Blueshirts in Dublin. Notes his motivation to join the Brigade as being religious, and also the fact that Dalton stopped his brothers from volunteering also, stating ‘he said that one was enough’. Sound recording of an interview conducted by Robert Stradling with William Geraghty, Dublin, who served as volunteer in Irish Brigade in Spain. Notes how he heard about General O’Duffy’s Brigade in a public information broadcast at the cinema, and his feelings towards Spain, stating ‘in my limited learnings of the history of the friendship that existed between Spain and Ireland and all that Spain tried to do in the sad times my forefathers experienced, the Spanish Armada, giving sanctuary to the O’Donnells and all the rest… I felt indebted to Spain for their kindness to… our ancestors’. Also refers to strength of his Christian faith as influencing factor on the journey to Spain. Notes his involvement in the Irish army prior to joining the Brigade, the issue of religious persecution, atrocities carried out and his interest in Spanish culture. Also refers to the Blueshirt movement, his view of General O’Duffy, the issue of minors serving in the Brigade and the non-intervention pact, stating ‘we had offers from America, even as far as Canada and America, they would’ve… provided their cavalry units… to go and fight communism’ and remembers some of his commanding officers, including Lieutenant George Timlin, and notes, ‘There is one person that I particularly remember… Tom Hyde, he was killed by mistake in an engagement between two armies that was… on the Franco side’. Provides account of journey to Spain on board a German vessel, stating ‘There was no provision made for meals or for sleeping… The conditions from Galway… was anything but calm’, and on to Salamanca, and then Cáceres where he notes the ‘royal welcome’ of the people and the standard of training there. Also recalls death of Gabriel Lee and carrying his stretcher, the issue of drink in the Irish Brigade, the events of 19 February 1937 and the attempted attack at Titulcia. Notes life in Ciempozuelos including sniper fire and executions of prisoners, and the capture of a Cuban prisoner. Refers also to friendship with an International Brigadier on his return to Ireland in approximately 1946, ‘What he saw when he arrived in Red Spain… he was shocked and horrified because he was also a Catholic and the reason that he went to Spain… the propaganda from the International Brigade’. Records also the contents of a private reference from General O’Duffy, his overall impression of O’Duffy, and issue of recognition of efforts of the Irish Brigade from the state, historians and the church, after their return to Ireland. In addition, notes his views on the articles of Sunday Independent Special Correspondent, Gertrude Gaffney, and details on uniforms, weaponry and pay are noted. Also recalls, on his return to Ireland, an attempt by Geraghty and about seven other men to take a Spanish ship from Derry to Bilbao, and the arrest of the vessel prior to departure.

Sound recording of an interview with Jimmy Kavanagh, Dublin who served in ‘C’ Company of Irish Brigade in Spain, by his son, James. Notes getting word from the Blueshirts about going to Spain, the trip to Galway, the storm at sea and the rescue operation, the journey to Spain, and impressions of Salamanca: ‘That’s where we were entertained. We were given lovely sandwiches, tea… cigarettes, everything’ and back on the train to Cáceres. Also records being fitted out in German uniforms at the barracks, their arrival at Ciempozeulos, and states of the Brigade, ‘the Irish Brigade did not see actually action, we were too small a company to go into action for a start, but we didn’t know that. We were really a garrison.’ Also recalls being on outpost duty, ‘we used to see movements… and I seen this movement and I said… “Hey look… there’s a Russian out there”… as the dawn broke… what was it?… It was an umbrella’. Notes also life in La Marañosa, and visit to a German battery, ‘the Germans that were there, there was no infantry… and they were a very proud lot, the Germans, ’cos they were nearly all officers, they wouldn’t speak to you… we didn’t know German’. In addition, records return to Cáceres before coming home, and on the subject of staying on, notes ‘those who wanted to could’ve stayed there but I was frightened to stay along with a good many more because in Cáceres when we were doing our training the Irish wasn’t all heroes, there was a lot of them very drunk and caused a lot of old trouble there and we became more or less unpopular.’ Records journey home to Dublin, and response of people in Ireland. Recording is poor quality and inaudible in parts.

Sound recording of an interview conducted by Robert Stradling with Denis Reynolds, Cootehill, county Cavan, who served in ‘D’ Company of Irish Brigade in Spain. Records how he heard about the Spanish Civil War through the media, what motivated him to go to Spain at 18 years of age with his friend Phil McBride, the situation in Ireland prior to his departure, his membership of Blueshirts and views on General O’Duffy. Refers to arrival in Galway, stating ‘When we arrived then in Galway there was a very big consignment of plain-clothes detectives and garda there and there was an order out for us to be arrested… it was on the 12th December 1936… the bishop of Galway came down… and he got up on the platform and he… appealed to the authorities not to arrest anyone except there were criminals’. Also describes journey on the tender from Galway Bay, and the issue of minors. In addition, notes a mass on the front marking the receipt of Sergeant Cadell into the church, the journey to Spain, impressions of the Spanish people and military training. Notes also drinking habits of Irish in Spain, and events surrounding the deaths of Tom Hyde and Dan Chute, and the attack at Titulcia, stating ‘We went out that day very early and we engaged this enemy fire… while we were doing that Franco’s troops was closing in behind in a big pincher movement and we had to withdraw to our own trenches that night… we were in a terrible state… when the morning came my coat was stiff with the white frost and I took it off and got two big sticks and stood it up on the top and I only had it up when it was riddled with machine-gun fire.’ Also records life at Ciempozuelos, including the disposal of corpses from the town, stating ‘I was in the mopping up party, and they picked a very young officer and the youngest lads we had… if you were older… you might never be the better of it, there was people dead for two weeks, more, and the dogs wouldn’t… go near a dead person if they could get a live person so the first thing we done was shot all the dogs… then… we brought all the corpses outside the town to the trenches and all the dead dogs, and buried them all.’ Notes billeting in a convent on arrival in the town, stating ‘the whole place was covered with blood… I saw the bodies of the nuns… and some of them wasn’t dead’. Includes an account of attack by enemy at La Marañosa, the execution of prisoners of war at Cáceres, carrying out religious duties in Spain, and further impressions of General O’Duffy. Also refers to the *Irish Independent* journalist Gertrude Gaffney in Spain, digging the trenches and dugouts, and his life in Ireland on his return from Spain.

Refers to membership of Blueshirts, views on General O’Duffy, communism and the issue of minors, noting ‘The reason why we left Spain because… more than fifty percent of the Brigade were under twenty-one… our good government of the day, held by Eamon De Valera, rushed the Citizenship Bill through... and if the fellas under twenty-one were not back in Ireland by such a date they were [displaced] persons, they had no country… so O’Duffy made sure they were back.’ Notes journey to Spain via Liverpool and Lisbon, his impressions of Spanish people, allegations of drunkenness, and interviews with other Brigadiers such as Matt Doolan and Paddy Quinn. Also mentions attack near Titulcia and mining the track of the armoured train, and impressions of Ciempozuelos and La Marañosa, noting the following about the latter, ‘what our biggest trouble there was shortage of water… we went searching and three miles down the mountainside we came across a farmhouse and a well… we loaded ourselves up… we drank ourselves sick… we hadn’t water for days and days… it turned out that that water after a number of days, we couldn’t use it, it was stinking… and we saw… green scum… we got in and emptied the well… there was at least seven or eight bodies in it, a whole family… who had been murdered by the Reds and thrown in the well’. Copy of a sound recording of an interview conducted for an edition of *Looking West* by Jim Fahy on Radio Éireann, with Phil McBride of Newbliss, county Monaghan, who served as volunteer in ‘B’ Company of Irish Brigade in Spain. Notes trip to Galway, being on board the tender in Galway Bay, and arrival in Spain. Also records arriving in Salamanca, training in Cáceres, and the deaths of Tom Hyde, Dan Chute and Gabriel Lee. On the subject of what motivated him to go to Spain, McBride states ‘The communists were a real threat and were it not for the Germans they probably would have dominated Europe. You had to take a stand somewhere.’ McBride refers to links between Ireland and Spain, the influence of the church on events in Ireland prior to the formation of the Irish Brigade, and the persecution of priests and nuns in Spain. In addition, notes reception received on return to Ireland, stating ‘We got a great reception, everywhere we got it… the Lord Mayor Alfie Byrne, we all got shaking hands with Alfie’. Mansfield, Metropolitan Division of Garda Síochána, Special Branch, Dublin Castle, regarding passport applications of Christopher Conway, 5 South King Street, Dublin, and James Patrick Cummins, 30 Hanbury Lane, Thomas Street, Dublin, noting ‘Christopher Conway… has made application for a passport to travel to France; Italy; Belgium; Germany; Switzerland and Holland, for the ostensible purpose of visiting Lourdes… James Patrick Cummins… has applied for a passport for France for the ostensible purpose of visiting the grave of his deceased brother… Both Conway and Cummins are active members of the Communist Party of Ireland and Conway is also associated with the Republican Congress Group… it would appear that both recently volunteered for service in Spain and… that the object of these men in applying for passports is to make their way to Spain via France’ (9 October 1936). Also includes photocopy of handwritten letter from James P. Cummins, 30 Hanbury Lane, to Minister for External Affairs, Dublin, requesting the office to hasten the processing of his passport application ‘as the slowness of the officials concerned has almost spoiled the travel as owing to the lateness of the season & delay the journey will be anything but pleasant’ [29 October 1936].

Photocopies of articles in various publications addressing the Spanish Civil War, such as the Spanish newspaper *Solidaridad Obrera*, and journals such as *The Irish Monthly*, *The Irish Ecclesiastical Record*, *Journal of Breifne Historical Society*, proceedings from the House of Commons, *Studia Hibernica*, *Journal of Irish Studies*, *History Ireland* and *Volunteer for Liberty*. Includes a poem entitled 'O’DUFFY, THE CHIEF OF THE “NATIONAL GUARD"', signed ‘L.O.’ and dated 10 August 1933, an article in Spanish in Solidaridad Obrera entitled ‘LA FUGURA DEL DIA. DE VALERA’, accusing Eamon De Valera of fascist sympathies (1938), and also a number of quotes in Italian from diplomat, Lodi Fé, concerning General O’Duffy, in Keogh’s *Eye Witness*, which includes the following translation, ‘O’Duffy is not a man of great intellectual resources; he has neither culture nor much political sense, other than a certain coarse intuition. He is above all a man of action, of great personal courage, disinterested and generous. These qualities, in the right circumstances, can make of him a useful and safe tool – Therefore it is expedient not to forget him’ (29 January 1937). In addition, an article in the *Irish Ecclesiastical Record* by Rev. Arthur H. Ryan, entitled ‘SPAIN, THE CHURCH, AND EUROPE’, noting events in Spain, an essay by J. Bowyer Bell in *Studia Hibernica* entitled ‘Ireland and the Spanish Civil War 1936-1939’, an essay by Mike Cronin entitled ‘Blueshirts, Sports and Socials’, an article in *Breifne* by Dermot Keogh entitled ‘AN EYE WITNESS TO HISTORY: FR ALEXANDER J. McCABE AND THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR 1936-1939’, an article entitled ‘Claremen in the Spanish Civil War’ by Peadar McNamara, and the Roll of Honour of Irishmen who fell in action in Spain whilst fighting on the Republican side and a list of International Brigadiers from Ireland that survived.
